New Community Hi! I found that there's a lot of games that COULD be advertised more IF there was a local community to announce it! So, (excuse the cross-posting)... I've created a new community! http://community.livejournal.com/act_gamers/It's a free account now - but I'll be making it into a paid account soon! Please advertise that you're either seeking a game... or a player! Current Mood: accomplished |

Love Letter to Anderson Cooper Oh, Andy... I found your video, you naughty man, right where you left it on YouTube. I love it when you get that masterful gleam in your eye, the way your glove caresses the whip, giving it a firm smack that sings to my soul... as only your hand can The last time I saw you was at the Kathy Griffin show at Madison Square Garden. I paused near you in the exit hallway. Andy, you looked so pale. Are you working too hard, traveling the world, delivering your dire bulletins like the never-ending beat of doom? You had a very cute young man with you who urged you to go backstage to see Kathy. I called out – "Oh, yes, you have to go. Kathy will be disappointed if you don't." You must remember me – I waved when you looked over. BTW, I like your friend. I'd be happy to work him into our scene. (Call me.) Susan |

Registration for Gencon 2008 is now open Hi all... I'm not a con org for Gencon, but I've gotten permission from the con orgs to put up this post to help spread the word that registration for Gencon '08 is now live That link goes to an upload of the email sent to the distribution list (with permission, again) so anyone can see the initial communication - please ignore the junk header/footer wrapping the content itself. The information at that link also goes into more detail about the steps for registering for Gencon yourself, and talks about a few of the more exciting recent developments regarding things happening at the con. Come on up to Brisbane yourself and keep us company, or spread the word to your fellow gamer. Or, preferably, both. It looks like Gencon '08 is going to be an event to remember. And, as has been mentioned elsewhere, supporting Gencon this year will help make sure it's around next year as well. Personally, I'm pretty damned excited about how Gencon is shaping up, and what the experience of the con itself is going to be like. Brief instructions as to links to follow for registration are under the cut, too. ( RegoCut )So, I hope to see you at Gencon. If for no other reason that to keep me company. I'm running an event there, so it's in my best interests to pass on the good word. I'll be the tragic cowboy figure who looks like this, but wearing this (so comfy!) while presiding over a mountain of these, and drinking these like lollywater. Please... don't leave me to caffeinate myself into some sort of tremorous, depressive stupor for lack of company. |

Film about Anna Politkovskaya Новый документальный фильм швейцарского режиссера Эрика Бергкраута "Письмо Анне" рассказывает о жизни и смерти журналистки Анны Политковской. Этот фильм едва ли увидят российские зрители. By Roland Elliott Brown The Moscow Times, May 16, 2008 A new documentary, "Letter to Anna," charts the life and death of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya. It is unlikely to be released in Russia. Swiss director Eric Bergkraut doesn't expect his latest film, "Letter to Anna," to go down well in Russia, or even to make it into theaters. But in an interview after the premiere of the feature-length version at the Hot Docs International Film Festival in Toronto, he said he didn't want his film to be perceived as "anti-Russian." "One can be very critical of Mr. Putin's politics without being anti-Russian at all," Bergkraut emphasized. "I am not sure if that is understood in Moscow today." "Letter to Anna" is a documentary describing the life and death of the independent-minded Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was often treated with suspicion by the Russian authorities, and indeed by no small number of ordinary Russians. Long time lurker Hello everyone!
I've been a lurker for a while, and I have been thoroughly enjoying the snippets and news related links every one posts every once in a while.
I have a few questions, hopefully, some of you will be willing to share your wisdom. I just finished up a two year Professional Writing Degree at the local college, and I was accepted at a university near me for a BA in Anthro. I don't plan on simply getting a BA; I'm hoping to further my academic career and attempt to get a Masters. Depending if I get that, then I'll attempt a PhD. I'm only twenty, but incredibly interested in this field. I was wondering since I have four years before applying for a position for a Masters, are there any tips or heads up that one would like to share in order to help me perhaps increase my chances at getting accepted for a Masters?
Any information would be greatly appreciated, also, Physical Anthro isn't offered here in my province, but I believe there is one university out of town that offers a Masters in Physical Anthro. Does anyone have any suggestions for good universities in North America who offer Physical Anthro at the MA level?
Thank you in advance. |

Moving Hello, all.
So, I am moving out of campus housing to an apartment I just got. Does anyone know the name or have experiences with those man with a van things? I see advertisements for them everywhere and they are all over craigslist.
So, I guess first, does anyone know of the name they have used before? Secondly...what questions should I ask (besides price). I am just nervous because you hear those horror stories of people getting their stuff stolen or lost. |

Good news! Thing 1: Most of you have heard by now, but the California Supreme Court has upheld the right of same-sex couples to marry. (They don't actually mention bisexuals in any of the articles, but it applies to us as well as gays and lesbians.) Thing 2: To quote MoveOn.org, this afternoon "The House of Representatives just voted 149 to 141 to cut off funding for the war in Iraq. This was followed by votes to put significant restrictions on President Bush's war policy, including a timeline for withdrawal, and creating a new GI Bill to help returning veterans." Food around Washington Square Park I'm going to be in the city in a couple weeks with my family and we'll probably be checking out the law school. What are some good, not too expensive, places to have lunch around Washington Square Park? |

My roommates left my room in an absolutely disgraceful and disgusting condition when they checked out. I tried to clean it up the best I could, but we didn't have a good vaccuum and the carpet is still a wretched mess. They left a lot of unwanted items in the room expecting someone to take care of it for them, too (which I ended up doing, but I guess they thought the staff would take care of it? Does that even happen?)
Are there any sort of repercussions given for messy rooms after check-out? Because if I'm charged anything, I'm not paying my share. |

Edit: THANK YOU, everyone, for all the insight! I wasn't expecting nearly this many people to respond. I really appreciate it!
Has anyone here ever pursued a BA in anthropology and then stopped your education there? If so... was it worth it?
I'm almost thirty, and I've not yet attended college. There's a long story there but I can pretty much sum it up to "poor" and "screwed up priorities."
Right now I'm probably in the best situation for college that I'll ever be - I'm working for U of Penn and their educational benefits are legendary. And I think I can actually get into this school once I build up an academic record at a local community college.
Here's my problem though: I'm barely at the point where I feel I have the discipline to pursue a BA. I'm scared that a BA in anthropology will not be enough to allow me to pursue any kind of related career. Do I really need to commit to a Ph.D? I worry that I'm too old, and that I might not have it in me to commit to the next six years or so working full time while going to school in the evenings - let alone the next... well, twelve or so, probably, that it would take to really get somewhere in this field.
Is there anyone here who stopped at a BA in anthro and actually has a job in the field? I guess that's what I'm wondering.
I think I'll pursue this in any case because the benefits of a college education are far more than the chance to make more money, or to pursue a career in your chosen field. The classes themselves would make it worth it to me. The new perspectives. Still, it's quite a commitment to make and I want to make as informed a decision as possible.
Any perspective would be welcome. Thanks. |

Undergrad thesis Hey,
This is my first post in this community... been pretty quiet so far, but there you have it. I'm currently doing my undergrad (BA) thesis. It's on online authority, looking at one chat room especially and looking at the ways in which authority is asserted and resisted. Plus the commonalities this has with real-life situations, even though it takes place in a virtual environment minus the whole physical-presence thing. Basically, the way people adapt to the virtual environment and still use similar strategies and have similar ideas.
I'm just wondering how in-depth an undergrad thesis needs to be. We were told about 10,000 words, but I'm currently on 14,000 and nowhere near finished. Do I need to expand theoretically on every point I make, or is it legitimate to just describe something without going into the ins and outs of it, maybe just adding that it COULD be expanded but that I won't because it's beyond the scope of the paper?
I mean, the theory I've been told to refer to is very, very wide and if I include it all and talk about everything I've been told to talk about, I'll end up with a book full of tangents. And I don't want it to be too complicated and theoretical, because to me, that's beside the point of my paper. So yeah - how in-depth would you say it needs to be?
Also - how many references should I have in the bibliography? Roughly?
Thanks!
